The book

Today we live in a time of great crisis, confronted by the gravest challenge that humanity has ever faced: the ecological consequences of our own collective karma. Global warming is only part of a much larger environmental and social crisis that compels us to reflect on the values and direction of our now global civilization. David R. Loy draws the shape of a new development of the Buddhist tradition. Ecodharma combines ecological concerns (eco) with the teachings of Buddhism and related spiritual traditions (dharma). The author invites us to a real process of awakening. That means not only social engagement as individuals helping other individuals, but finding ways to address the problematic economic and political structures that are deeply implicated in the eco-crisis and the social justice issues that confront us today. This reclaims the goal of enlightenment from an exclusively individualistic model. Because the ecological crisis is also a collective spiritual crisis, and a potential turning point in our history. In Ecodharma David R. Loy encourages us to to become bodhisattvas/ecosattvas, emphasizing three components or aspects: practicing in the natural world, exploring the eco-implications of Buddhist teachings, and embodying that understanding in the eco-activism that is needed today.
