Cookie Policy
What are Cookies?
Cookies are small pieces of text (letters and/or numbers) that allow the web server to store on the client (i.e. the browser) information to be reused during the same access to the website (session cookies) or afterwards, even days later (persistent cookies). Cookies are stored, based on the user’s preferences, by the individual browser on the specific device used (i.e. computer, tablet, smartphone). Similar technologies can be used to collect information on the user’s behavior and on the use of services.
How can Cookies be categorized?
Depending on their characteristics and use, cookies can be grouped in different categories:
- Strictly necessary cookies. These cookies are essential for the correct operation of our website and are used in order to manage login and access to reserved functions of the website, in general to accelerate, improve or customize the level of service to the users. The life of cookies can be strictly limited to the work session (they are deleted once the browser is closed) or longer if they are designed to recognize the visitor’s computer. If they are disabled, the use of services available upon login can be compromised, while the public section of the website can still be used regularly.
- Analytical and performance cookies. These cookies are used to anonymously collect and analyze the traffic and use of the website. While they do not identify the user, these cookies allow to, for example, identify whether such user reconnects to the website at different times. They also allow to monitor the system and improve its performance and useability. Disabling such cookies does not result in any loss of functionality.
- Profiling cookies. These are permanent cookies used to identify (both anonymously and not) the user’s preferences and improve the user’s browsing experience in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences that the user showed while surfing the web.
- Third-party cookies. While visiting a website, the user can receive cookies both from the visited website (“proprietary”), and from websites managed by other organizations (“third parties”). An example is the use of “social plugins” (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Google+) aimed at sharing contents on social networks. The presence of these plugins results in the transmission of cookies from and to all websites managed by third parties. The processing of information collected by “third parties” is governed by their respective policies to which you are kindly invited to refer.
How should cookies be managed?
The user can decide to accept or reject cookies through the settings of his/her browser.
If technical cookies are totally or partly disabled, the use of website features reserved to registered users may be compromised. Conversely, the usability of public contents is guaranteed also when cookies are completely disabled.
Disabling “third-party” cookies shall not affect the usability of the website in any way. This option can be set specifically for individual websites and web applications. Moreover, the best browsers allow to choose different settings for “proprietary” cookies and for “third-party” cookies.
For example, in Google Chrome you can click on the wrench icon in the top right-hand corner and select “Settings”. Then, you select the “Under the hood” tab and change the Privacy settings.
